Understanding Sensory Processing Challenges

Toddlers with sensory integration challenges struggle to process information like sound, touch, and light. Whether over-sensitive or under-responsive, these difficulties can lead to meltdowns and anxiety, making participation in group settings like preschool incredibly difficult.

Identifying the Concern

Toddlers with sensory integration challenges have difficulty processing and responding appropriately to sensory information such as sound, touch, movement, taste, or light. They may be overly sensitive (overreacting to noises, textures, or bright lights) or under-responsive (seeking intense movement or not reacting to pain), which can affect daily activities like eating, dressing, playing, and sleeping. These difficulties can lead to frequent meltdowns, anxiety, or avoidance of certain environments, making social interaction and participation in group settings challenging. Sensory processing issues may also impact attention, motor coordination, and emotional regulation, as the child struggles to organize and interpret sensory input.

Creating Balance Through Sensory Integration

Through early identification and structured routines, Growing Healthy Preschool Intervention finds support specialists to help toddlers manage sensory experiences. With early identification, structured routines, and support such as occupational therapy, toddlers can gradually improve their ability to manage sensory experiences and function more comfortably in their environment.
